Information Gordon Walker was a member of the Ramblers from Workington. His dream of a place in the Lake District where members could take a cheap holiday was realised in 1962, when the chalet was opened by Marjorie Wakefield of Keswick, President of Lake District Area. (There is a seat in the garden in her memory.)
The purpose-built chalet is next to the village hall in the tiny village of Stair in the Newlands Valley, three miles from Keswick. It is overlooked by Causey Pike and Barrow; Cat Bells and Maiden Moor are not far away.
The original building comprised two bedrooms, a kitchen/common room, a small scullery, and two toilets. Over the years the chalet has been extended and improved. It now caters for 16 people in two bedrooms, each with four double bunks. Toilets and showers are en suite, and there is an excellent drying room, a fully equipped kitchen, a pantry with fridge/freezer, and plenty of hot water.
